The Greatest Generation
Theresa May said this today at the 75th Dday memorial events
I know this to be true already, for it was my Parents generation
My mum and dad would have been 99 and 98 now, I was a late 5th child of 6
I was at the 40th celebration 35 years ago when I was 25, so 1/2 a lifetime ago
So much could be said, and by far better people than me
I suppose the people in my1st book are of that generation, and maybe that's the strength in it
I honestly don't know
What I do know is that the Love I got from my family, from the Greatest Generation was always
there, in the dark and sad times, and there were many. But also the laugher still rings loud. The total
love poured into me I have tried to pour into my our kids, my 2 daughters. I am just a weak echo of
father, but I'm glad if anyone says I'm like my dad. There is no higher praise than that.
People also say I look like my mother. Again I don't know is the strengths I put into some of the
stories I write based on the love from my mum and dad. I loved my dad so much that I did not want
to place him in my 1st book. But when I looked back at Big Sid the Butcher I realised that only one
person could love that much, yes it was my dad, and I didn't realise it was him I was clothing as
Big Sid the Butcher. I'd come in late from a shift on my computers and my dad would have the first
bite of his dinner on his fork. He'd say he was not hungry and offer me his dinner on a plate.
This is the standard of his generation, The Greatest Generation, born in the 1920s before the
Depression. One of my uncles was actually a Ploughman before tractors arrived.
There are many stories I could tell, which are far far greater and true, than anything I could even
make up. But I won't live long enough to tell them, I'd have to outlive all the family to avoid
everybodies' blushes and with a quadruple heart bypass under my belt and ckd and my arthritis and
even tinnitus wearing me down, that will not happen.
In 1996 mum died and dad nearly died 8 weeks later in the same marriage bed.
Read Padre Pio and Me for all the details, the takeaway as the Americans call it was that I got a
family. I don't believe my dad was "saved" just so I could have a family and then turn into a big
writer, that nobody pays to read. My own health would have to be returned to me so that I could be a
shadow of the Greatest Generation. I have dreams and plans should that miracle arrive. We all have
IF ONLYS, I won't say what I'd like to do, but it would involve giving Theresa May a new job, as I
hear she's available. I hope my last years will be my best years, at least I have a target of 27 books to
aim for, so 9 more to finish before I'm finished. And no I'm not joking about Theresa May, I have a
plan for me and her, a Charity plan, but that's all for today.
